Blue Skies Jumper, issue 281 September 2026  

The design combines plain stocking stitch with a pretty lace pattern, creating a jumper that is interesting to knit but still very wearable.

There is one feature that I particularly love…The lace travels over the shoulder.

The lace begins at the cuff of the short sleeve and travels upwards along the centre of the sleeve. But instead of stopping at the armhole, it continues right over the shoulder. This is because Blue Skies uses a saddle shoulder construction. If you've never come across a saddle shoulder before, the simplest way to picture it is as a section of the sleeve that extends upwards and across the top of the shoulder towards the neck. Rather than having a conventional shoulder seam where the front and back meet, the sleeve creates a sort of knitted “bridge” across the shoulder. This gives a designer a wonderful opportunity to make the construction itself part of the decoration. For Blue Skies, I used that space to allow the lace pattern to continue its journey from the sleeve, over the shoulder and towards the neckline. I love the way this makes the stitch pattern feel as though it is travelling around the garment rather than simply sitting on the bottom half of the jumper.
